Delving into the Disciplines
In 1 Timothy 4:6-7 , Paul encourages us to train ourselves to be Godly, for physical training is of come value but Godliness holds value both in this life and in the life to come. But oftentimes, with Christlikeness as our goal, we go on to treat the symptoms of our Sin condition and not the real causes of it. Spiritual disciplines help us to refine our character and break out of years of in-grained habit that's contrary to God.
To this end, our community is going to focus on a set of spiritual disciplines outlined in Richard Foster's Celebration of the Disciplines. This is a spiritual classic written in our lifetime and is addressed to "ordinary" Christians about how to practice the spiritual disciplines in real life.
Instead of encouraging you to read this book, I'll be so bold as to ask you why you couldn't. You can find it on Amazon in hardcover (or audio!) for five bucks. If money or motivation is a problem we'll be happy to help.

Good challenge. Someone actually gave me the book before I graduated High School, but it was way over my head then. I never picked it up again - so I think it is fitting that I give it another try now that I'm psuedo-graduating 6 years later. I'm in!

This is a great comment Eric. I've heard several people now say that they picked this book up and put it down. What this book contains is a treasure of spiritual practice. During our time studying it as a community, I hope we can work together to make this book both understandable and practical.

BTW, I downloaded the audio version of this book from Audible.com for five dollars and put it on my iPod. It works on pretty much all personal audio gadgets and is only 3 hours long (unabridged).
I plan on challenging people in different ways during this series. From my original post, my challenge to everyone is to read through it once. With the audio version being only 3 hours long, I'd challenge some of you to buy it that way and listen to it once a week (or every other week) for the duration of our series. This is only for people that are so inclined but I'm hoping that, throughout this series, people will use these challenges to possibly stretch themselves a little.
